Beginning Mah Jong – Sunni Landis & Nancy Roberts 336-1799 nroberts@verizon.net

Eight weeks of 2 hour classes for beginners.  Students will be taught the basics of Mah Jong and will play the game each week.  Students need to purchase instruction booklet for $20.00

 Both instructors are experienced Mah Jong players.   Nancy is a retired teacher.

Mah Jong Scoring – Nancy Roberts nroberts@verizon,net

This class will play Mah Jong hands that were distributed  in the
Mah Jong beginners class as well as the hands in the Wright Patterson books.  Each class member will count their score at the end of each hand.  There will be no other instruction.


This class will meet on Wednesdays at the Chincoteague Library as follows: 

8 Sessions:  Jan 14,21,28,  Feb 4,11,18,25, Mar 4,  11-1 P.M.

Opera I  Tosca-  Glenn Winters

The Least boring Opera Written,” Puccini’s Tosca
The action never stops in this suspense thriller with a gorgeous musical score.  When Floria Tosca ( a famous diva) and her lover ( the artist Cavaradossi) become pawns in the Baron Scarpia’s game of political intrigue, all three will meet their doom.  This course will provide complete historical background as well as detailed musical analysis.  Suitable for beginners and aficionados alike.

 Opera II  Barber of Seville - Glenn Winters

“Figaro, Figaro, Figaro!  Rossini’s The Barber of Seville”

Perhaps the funniest situation comedy ever written, the Barber is a feast of witty dialogue, sight-gags, memorable comic characters and music that makes all the humor possible.  This course will provide complete historical background as well as detailed musical analysis.  Suitable for beginners and aficionados alike.

Experience:  Community Outreach Musical Director, Va. Opera.  Dr. Winters received a Doctor of Music from Northwestern Univ. with experience teaching college level piano, operatic baritone performances and authoring an original educational opera, “History Alive!”

 Experience:  JeNette is a retired Master Gardener with 30 years of experience.  She is the owner of Puddin Hill Garden Center and regularly shows her rose garden on the Habitat Tour.

Six weeks of 1 ½ hour classes for beginners and others who want to be able to speak and understand ordinary and practical French phrases while traveling in “La Belle France.”  Students need to purchase small book (perfect size to put in a suitcase) that has 2 CDs for practice at home.  The book with cassettes costs $15.00.  Class will stress spoken language and practice in everyday situations.

 Experience: Lana has been ringing handbells for more than 20 years and directing handbell and chime choirs for 12 years.  She currently directs TheGraceful Ringers at Grace UMC in Parksley and is the District Chair of the VA Eastern Shore for the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers.

 

Drawing with Color –Eileen Weber 787-2056 ewsailor@verizon.net 

Basic drawing techniques will be discussed as well as composition, perspective, values and forms and the importance of light to drawing.  A stilllife will be set up with a light source for each class.  A 30 minute lesson and demonstration will be followed by one hour of drawing.

Materials needed – large sketch pad, at least two drawing pencils, one soft (3B) and a medium (HB), a kneaded eraser or soft eraser, Viewfinder, optional charcoal pencils, graphite pencils, and colored pencils.

Experience:  Eileen has been drawing and taking lessons for most of her adult life.  A member of the ES Art league and the Stage Door Gallery.  She paints in both oil and watercolor and recently has been experimenting with pastels.  “My interest in teaching this workshop is to share my love of art and help others enjoy art.  I also find teaching helps me to review what I have learned."

This is a five lecture series that uses pictures of hand held birds to illustrate various points.

Practical Digital Photography – John Shire & Charlie Ross 442-3633

Topics include the art of composition, the use of light and control of the photographic process.

Prerequisites:  Must have a digital camera.  Should have the ability to use a computer to develop photos.

Experience: John Shire has been photographing for over 40 years and has shown his work in CT and N.Y. galleries.

Charlie Ross has been photographing over 50 years, and shows his work on the Eastern Shore.

Learn to play the best card game yet invented for the thinking person. Will cover bridge etiquette, counting, scoring, etc.

An Introduction to Virginia’s Wine industry.  Explore Virginia’s viticultural areas.  Learn how grapes are grown and harvested at The Vineyard at Point Breeze on the Eastern Shore.

Spend the next three Fridays visiting local wineries to find out how the grapes become wine.  Finally, taste the results!  Directions to the wineries will be distributed at the first class meeting

Experience:  J.H. “Rock” Stephens and his wife, Kris, own the Vineyard at Point Breeze, a twelve acre vinifera vineyard, located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.  He has been an active member of the Virgiinia Vineyards Assoc. since 1997 and is currently serving his second term as President.

 

Knitting Basics and Beyond – Nancy Hershey – 442-7907 njhershey@yahoo.com

This workshop will include the fundamental skills for hand-knitting.  For those who want to learn to knit, the basics, knit and purl stitch, cast on, and cast off will be taught.  For those ready to learn more, cabling, seaming, increase, decrease and picking up stitches will be taught as we make cabled fingerless gloves, socks, and a felted purse.

 Materials required – Size 8 needles, 2 skeins (200) grams) of knitting worsted weight (medium) yarn.  Materials will be available for a cost of $10.00. Yarn and needles needed for the project will be available at a 10% discount

Class limit – 6   Class will meet at the “Purls “ yarn shop.

The class will be four sessions, each session devoted to one specific aspect of theatre – acting, directing, playwriting, and production.  No experience is necessary.
